345. GOD’S WORD OR NOTHING!
(The Single Woman Series – Batch 6)
Irrespective of how much they have studied and read and claim to have experienced, I have absolutely no regard for the content offered by any kind of Consultant, Psychologist or other self-proclaimed Life and Relationship Expert, if:
1. That person is not a Christian and therefore has no relationship with Jesus Christ and does not know God;
2. That person claims to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour and uses the title “Christian” but gives advice that is completely secular and based solely on worldly knowledge, theories, concepts and ideas, nothing being taken from the Word of God;
3. That person claims to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour but although the advice given touches cursorily on content provided in the Word of God, it is for the most part, based on secular knowledge, theories, concepts and ideas;
4. That person claims to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour and the advice he or she gives aims to equally balance secular knowledge, theories, concepts and ideas with content from the Word of God.
It doesn’t matter the topic, how articulate or how many persons hold the so-called expert and his advice in high regard. Without apology, I firmly reject what all of the four (4) types of people above have to offer because it is a compromised message and is therefore bound to contain untruths that will lead me down the wrong path and direction.
I say this because the Bible clearly teaches that the Word of God and nothing else is the ultimate authority in ALL matters. It overrides everything else and the wisdom to be gleaned from it trumps all. Whereas confidence cannot be put in secular knowledge, theories and ideas, confidence can be safely put and without regret, in the Word of God. It is a tried, teste and true book, inspired by the God of heaven and earth.
If someone does not know God therefore, the one who gave him or her life and brought him or her into this world, I don’t want to hear anything that he or she has to say about life, as he or she is clueless as to what it is really about, who we are and why we have been placed here. He or she has no fear for the true and living God and therefore, has no good wisdom, since the Bible states that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10).
Furthermore, if someone claims to be a Christian, yet the advice he or she gives does not reflect God’s truth, his entire counsel and the principles as found in his Word, to me, their advice is a complete waste of time and is sure to be full of error. It is not enough for a person who professes to know Jesus, to merely touch on biblical principles and to mainly present secular content in the advice that he or she gives. It is also not enough to present a balanced offering, by giving equal amounts of information from both secular teachings and what is derived from the Word of God.
The Word of God is not on par with any worldly ideas or knowledge. It is not their co-equal. It is superior, it having come from the sovereign God. It is insulting therefore to mix it or to try to mix it with worldly ideas and concepts. It stands alone and sufficiently so. The answers to life’s problems, every single one of them, can be found in the Bible and a person is not truly wise and has no business advising other people about their life problems and struggles, unless he or she believes this book, spends time reading and meditating on it and obeying it.
No Consultant, Psychologist, Life Coach or Relationship Expert is worth his or her salt therefore, unless that person has a genuine relationship with the Lord of creation, Jesus Christ and therefore knows that all that matters is what the Word of God says on EVERY matter. It being the first and final authority, such a person would seek guidance and answers from the Word of God alone, rejecting any worldly idea, theory or concept that is not aligned with what it proclaims. Having spent time with the Saviour and in his Word, such a person would then aim to provide advice solely based on what the Word of God teaches. He or she would seek to diagnose problems based on what the scriptures reveal and nothing else, he or she knowing and believing in the heart, that God’s Word is infallibly true.
Here is what David said about the awesomeness of the Word of God in Psalm 19:7-11, which he clearly held in the highest esteem:
- “The law of the Lord is PERFECT, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is SURE, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are RIGHT, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is PURE, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is CLEAN, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are TRUE and RIGHTEOUS altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.”
There are those that will say, well how then do you explain situations where Life Coaches, Relationship Experts, Consultants and Psychologists have given advice, not based on what the Word of God teaches but from their own ideas and secular knowledge and when taken, it worked? For example, what about that lady who, though she claimed to be a Christian, her praying, fasting and believing God for a husband for many a year never seemed to work until she did what a particular Relationship Expert who claimed to be spiritual, told her to do? Yes it required her to do some things and to learn some things not taught in the Bible but at the end of the day, it worked! She now has a man in her life!
My answer to this question is simple: “Let God be true but every man a liar” (Romans 3:4). I don’t care if people parade their so-called “results” in my face, as evidence that the advice they received (which was not totally based on God’s Word) and put into practice, worked. I refuse to be deceived or to be led down that road. Irrespective of what people state they have “reaped” from any teaching that is not aligned with the Word of God, I reject it because that teaching is from the devil.
Sometimes, God tests his children, as is clear in his Word. The question he may be posing is: “Will you turn your back on what my Word declares and open your ears instead to what this so-called Expert is saying you need to do because other people are claiming that they did it and it worked OR will you remain grounded in my teachings and what you know to be true, although nothing seems to be working out in your life?”
Should this be the question, my answer is that I choose to remain fixed upon the Word of God, even if nothing ever changes in my life because I KNOW that his Word is true. Isaiah 50:10 states “Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him TRUST in the name of the Lord, and STAY upon his God.”
Isaiah 30:7 also states of the Israelites who foolishly rejected God’s counsel and ran to Egypt, thinking that the Egyptians were able to help them “For the Egyptians shall help in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I cried concerning this, THEIR STRENGTH IS TO SIT STILL.”
In verses 1-3, God stated of their misplaced confidence which they were bound to regret, in time:
- “WOE to the rebellious children, saith the Lord, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin: That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt! Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your SHAME, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your CONFUSION.”
It all comes down to believing. Some persons claim to believe God but yet they distrust his plan and his timing for their lives. They say that they believe his Word but their actions prove that they think that this Word is not sufficient. They therefore open their itching ears to listen to what people who claim to be spiritual, have to say, when all of what they say do not line up with what God’s Word teaches. Such persons cover with a covering, yes but it is not of God’s spirit!
When people claim to have done something extra to what the Bible teaches based on what some Life or Relationship Guru has advised and that it has worked and they eagerly share the person’s information so that I too can apply what they told them to do, to also reap results, I remember what God cautioned in Deuteronomy 13. He instructed his people that, irrespective of who the bearer of the message is, how highly he is regarded or if what he has said or advised in the past has come to pass, they were not to go along with what he advised that they do, if not in accordance with what the Word of God declares.
God’s instruction to his people, the principle of which still applies today was:
- “If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; Thou shalt NOT hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the Lord your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Ye shall walk after the Lord your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey HIS voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.”
On this chapter, one commentator wrote:
- “The commands of Deuteronomy 13 compel the modern believer to remain faithful to God. If signs or wonders, close relatives, or national or ethnic ties would lead a person to unfaithfulness to Jesus Christ, all of those should be rejected in honor and faithfulness to the Lord.”
Another shared:
- “Godly discernment will always carefully examine the message of a spiritual leader, instead of the spiritual experiences which may surround him or her.”
Finally, a third commentator rightly conveyed that:
- “Miraculous signs alone were never meant to be a test of truth. Miracles happen in many religions because Satan uses false religions and false prophets to deceive the world (2 Cor. 11:13-15; Eph. 6:11; Rev. 12:9). So Moses warned the people that the standard for truth must never be a miraculous sign or wonder (or other areas of human experience). The standard of truth is the Word of God. A prophet’s or a dreamer’s prediction may come true. But if his message contradicted God’s commands, the people were to trust God and His Word rather than their experience of a miracle. If human experience seemed to contradict God’s clear teachings, the Israelites were to bow in submission to God’s commands, FOR HIS WORD IS TRUTH.” (John 17:17).
In closing, as I sit still waiting on God and hoping for a spouse and for other areas in my life to change, I have resolved to stick to his Word, to submit to his counsel and none else. I don’t care if someone claims to have listened to a Relationship Consultant and done what he or she said to do and it resulted in a man coming into their life and marriage. If that Consultant is not saved or claims to be but teaches and endorses practices not found in God’s Word or based on it, I reject ALL of what he or she has to say, even if it means I remain perpetually single.
Today, on a Christian radio station I was listening to, it spoke of the beauty of marriage but also spoke about Christians who never get married for different reasons. I chuckled to myself somewhat painfully, when it stated that in the past, women who never got married were referred to as “old maidens” but today more respectfully as “unclaimed blessings”.
I found both to be painful titles, none of which I want to bear! Yet, as someone who has been praying to God, believing his Word and waiting on him alone to provide a husband for me for more than twenty (20) years, to date, none have come. As a person that has always loved family life done God’s way and that has long desired marriage and children, my many years of singleness have not been easy. I have shed many a tear and suffered many a ridicule. Yet, I know that God knows best and he is faithful. As much as I want to marry still, it cannot be at the price of forsaking God’s counsel, even where the so-called Expert and those who have gone along with his or her teachings, promise results at the end.
I will remain rooted to the Word of God which I know in my heart to be true, no matter what. I have nothing to show but by the grace of God, may I pass this test.
