294. JESUS – DO YOU KNOW HIM?

(The Faith Forum Series – Batch 4)

It is not enough to say that you believe in Jesus, that he rose from the dead and that you have confessed him as Lord and accepted the blood covering that is freely offered for the forgiveness of your sins and your redemption.

For, there are many who say this but do not really consider the Lord Jesus Christ as being LORD over their lives. They live as they want to live, without any thought of accountability and do whatever they want to do, providing no avenue whatsoever for the Lord Jesus to truly be Lord in their lives. As far as they are concerned, they are the ones in control and they think of Jesus as just someone theoretical and as the main idea in their religion.

That is it: It is just religion, no relationship.

In Matthew 15:8-9, describing such religious people and the futility of their worship, Jesus said: “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me…”

He also said in Matthew 7:21: “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.”

In any true walk and relationship with Jesus, a child of God would tell you, that He (Jesus) is in ultimate control. At times, such a child is stubborn and wants his own way, yes but ultimately, that child must return and bow at the feet of the Master, surrendering his will for the Lord’s.

This is a hallmark of true Christianity. Even the most weak Christian knows and operates in such a way where Jesus is at the helm, him having purchased the right to steer the ship of the Christian’s life, wherever or however he pleases, by his precious blood.

If Jesus is not truly the Captain of your life-ship and this is not demonstrated in the life that you live, then you are merely fooling yourself. You’ve said he is Lord with your lips and that has gained you a place in the pews but you live as a lord over your own life, dominating your own affairs. You do as you please and take no instructions from Him because you disregard his Word the Bible and rebel against His will. In such a case, you’ve had a taste of things pertaining to Christianity but you are as lost as the rest of the world, having yet to come to a knowledge of the truth.

As Elijah stated in 1 Kings 18:21, “How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be GOD, follow him.”

Genuine acceptance of the knowledge of the truth changes you because your perspective on life changes. You realize that you were not placed on this earth to serve yourself but to be a servant to the true and living God. You realize that you are not worthy of self-glorification and cease pursuing same because ALL the glory belongs to God.

You cannot claim to know Christ and remain the same. You cannot claim that He is Lord yet remain on the throne of your life, through your own self-will.

To truly know Jesus is to daily live life with the resolve: “Not my will Lord but yours be done.”

To truly know Jesus is to surrender your life completely to His Lordship. He gets to determine where you will go and what you will do and who you will meet and what you will say. There is no avenue of your life that He is not permitted access to reign.

This means that he will sometimes send you to places you do not want to go and tell you to do things that you do not want to do and have a purpose for your life that you are reluctant to embrace but because He is Lord, you know you have no choice but to obey.

Even when you stubbornly put up an initial fight because his will is not your will for your life and the flesh within you wants to have its own way, if you are in relationship with Jesus, you know, that it is His will for your life that will thrive, not yours. For, you have been bought with a price. He therefore expects you to glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are not your own but God’s (1 Corinthians 6:20).

If you are a true Believer therefore in the resurrection of Jesus Christ and his Spirit is in you, he will relentlessly pursue you, giving you not a moment’s peace until your will is perfectly aligned to His. This was the experience of men of old, like Moses and Jonah and it is still the experience of every bona fide Christian today.
