231. WHERE DOES LIFE COME FROM AND WHERE DID IT BEGIN?

(The Abundant Life Series – Batch 2)

Have you ever wondered where life came from? Have you ever pondered the question: “When and where did it all begin?” Well, the Bible gives the answer.

In Revelations 4:8-11 for example, John, while on earth, recounts what he saw and heard in the spirit, of matters pertaining to heaven. He saw what he referred to as four beasts (which are seraphims as confirmed in Isaiah 6:1-3) and twenty-four elders worshipping God, who was seated on the throne.

He stated:

  • “And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who LIVETH for ever and ever, The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that LIVETH for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for THOU hast created ALL THINGS, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”

This same truth is contained in more detail in Colossians 1:16-18, where it declares of Jesus, who is God the Son and part of the Godhead:

  • “For by him were ALL THINGS created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: ALL THINGS were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and BY HIM ALL THINGS CONSIST.
  • And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.”

In Genesis 2:7, it reads: “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of LIFE; and man became a LIVING soul.”

Jesus, who is God the Son, also made reference to himself as the source of life and life itself. For example, he said on different occasions to different audiences:

  • “…I am the way, the truth, and THE LIFE: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 14:6)
  • “…I am the bread of LIFE: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35)
  • “…I am the resurrection, and the LIFE: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he LIVE: And whosoever LIVETH and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?” (John 11:25-26)
  • “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of LIFE.” (John 8:12)

He is LIFE. He did not just create life but he sustains it. Everything that exists, their existence is tied up in his existence. He created the angels, the devil, dominions, principalities, powers, everything, what we know and see in the natural realm and what also exists in the spiritual realm. He lives and reigns forever. If he were to stop existing, which will never happen, we and everything, including the angels, the devil etc. would also cease to exist because like Jacob and Benjamin, where Jacob’s life was bound up in the life of the lad, the life and existence and continuance of humanity, animals, plants, angels and everything in the spiritual realm is bound up in the life of God.

Hence the reason that John 3:16 states: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting LIFE.”

Romans 6:23 states: “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal LIFE through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

1 John 5:20 states: “And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal LIFE.”

Life is constituted IN HIM. He can therefore give life and take life, as, him being the fountain of LIFE, life flows out from HIM.

This is why Jesus stated in John 15:4-6:

  • “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.”

It is also why the Word of God states that all who hate him, love death (Proverbs 8:36). For, he is THE SOURCE OF LIFE and life itself, both natural life (which is temporary) and spiritual life (which is eternal).

If you hate him, the one who created you and sustains you and the one in whom everything consists, then you hate LIFE and so love death. This is why the rebellious tend to be perpetually depressed, suicidal and look for every way out other than Jesus. They fight against LIFE (which is what Jesus Christ is) and so they self-detrimentally embrace death.

In John 10:10, Jesus stated of the devil and then of himself, the SOURCE of life: “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have LIFE, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

Even when natural life on earth is over, Jesus is able to give a more excellent and abundant life, called eternal life because LIFE belongs to him is vested in Him and IS Him.

Hence the reason why Jesus said:

  • “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.”
  • “…I am the resurrection, and the LIFE: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he LIVE: And whosoever LIVETH and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?” (John 11:25-26)

It is also why it was stated in James 1:12: “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of LIFE, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.”

Colossians 3:4 states: “When Christ, who is our LIFE, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.”

CONCLUSION

Given that Jesus is our life and that everything, whether in this natural world or in the spiritual realm that exists, comes from him and exists in him, how will we respond to Him?

In Deuteronomy 30:19-20, it states:

  • “I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you LIFE and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose LIFE, that both thou and thy seed may LIVE: That thou mayest love the Lord thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: FOR HE IS THY LIFE, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.”

John 3:36 reminds us of the inescapable truth concerning Jesus Christ, the Son of God the Father and God the Son, the one in whom LIFE consists, that: “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting LIFE: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see LIFE; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”

In John 6:47-58, Jesus stated and it is still true today:

  • “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting LIFE. I am that bread of LIFE. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.
  • I am the LIVING bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall LIVE for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the LIFE of the world…
  • Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no LIFE in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal LIFE; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
  • As the LIVING Father hath sent me, and I LIVE by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall LIVE by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall LIVE for ever.”
