346. AS WISE OR AS FOOLS?

(The Abundant Life Series – Batch 5)

I am paraphrasing a bit but as P. Coelho rightly stated, “We live as though we’ll never die and die as though we never lived.”

Why? Because we lack wisdom. We deludedly think that life is about possessions, position, promotion, power, pomposity, popularity, politics and pedigree. We wear our pride on our chests and all our lives, despite all of our learning, we fail to understand HOW life is to be lived and most importantly, WHO it is to be lived for.

Ever learning, yet we are never able to come to the knowledge of the truth (2 Timothy 3:7). So, we waste our limited time here on earth, running after and being preoccupied with worthless endeavours and needless pursuits.

Tell me, when the judgment bell rings, what will be the verdict? Would we have lived as wise or would we have lived as fools?

We think that these earthly things matter, when they don’t. All that matters is what you’ve done with Jesus, who is called Christ. What matters is whether you have believed on his resurrection and confessed with your mouth that he is Lord and have therefore been saved by God’s grace or not. What matters is if you have been serving him and obeying him, as opposed to living life as if you were your own authority.

Don’t tell me that you have believed on Jesus and are saved, if he is yet to take the reigns of control of your life and to be Lord over it. Why call him Lord, Lord, if you do not the things that he says? (Luke 6:46). Like the people that Jesus spoke of in Matthew 15:8, could it be that you call him Lord with your lips but your heart is far from him?

I’ve said it before but it needs saying again. Tell me, when the judgment bell rings, what will be the verdict? Would we have lived as wise or would we have lived as fools?

There is a man who God called a fool in the Bible, although he most likely did not think of himself in this way. He was quite wealthy and was what people would have considered to be a success in life. Yet, when God weighed his life, he was found in the balance to be wanting. For, he had lived not as wise but as a fool, pursuing after the material things of this earth which he hoarded for himself without consideration for others, while making no time for spiritual matters.

In Luke 12:15-21, Jesus, knowing all things and of this story, related what had happened with this man, as a warning to his disciples. The scripture reads:

  • “And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
  • And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”
