88. A LAZARUS TESTIMONY

In life, sometimes you may find that there are pits so deep and so dark and so dreadful, that people will leave you for dead. They will walk away from you, concluding that you’re a lost cause, that it is too late or that you are too broken, for life to be salvaged.

Like the priest and the Levite who saw their jewish brother who was badly beaten and left for half-dead in Luke 10:30-37, these people will observe your predicament and pass by on the other side.

There are some who will even see you in the rubble of your circumstance and although there is a faint pulse still beating within, will throw more stones on top of you before walking away!

These are like the people spoken of in Zechariah 1:15 who “helped forward the affliction” of God’s people, meaning, made their pain worse. They are like the people of Edom described in the book of Obadiah, who, in the time of their brother Israel’s adversity, stood on the other side, did not help but looked on and rejoiced, spoke proudly against them and did what they could to make matters worse. These are the mocking Penninahs of this world, the cursing Shimeis and the discouraging Sanballats and Tobiahs.

David spoke of both types of people, those who pass on the other side (abandon you) when you need support the most and those who throw more stones at you when down in your pit or underneath your rubble. This he experienced at the hands of man when he was in a low place.

As one close to death, David said in Psalm 38:10-12:

• “My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me. My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off. They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long.”

YET, David sought God in his low and dark place. In his weakness, he acknowledged “I am ready to halt” and “mine enemies are lively, and they are strong”, YET, in what seemed like A HOPELESS CIRCUMSTANCE, he prayed to THE GOD OF ALL HOPE. He cried, “Forsake me not, O Lord: O my God, be not far from me. Make haste to help me, O Lord my salvation.” (vs. 17, 19, 21-22)

And the Lord heard him and answered his prayer!

From experience and because he had a relationship with God, David knew that he could help a man, no matter how deep his adversity, how dark his pit or how far buried underneath the burdens and cares of this life. It mattered not if people thought he was a goner for sure and things would never look up. For he served the God of REDEMPTION! In Psalm 20, David declared in testimony of another time when God had answered his prayer:

• “The Lord hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee; Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion; Remember all thy offerings, and accept thy burnt sacrifice; Selah. Grant thee according to thine own heart, and fulfil all thy counsel. We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners: the Lord fulfil all thy petitions. Now know I that the Lord saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God. They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright. Save, Lord: let the king hear us when we call.”

You may be in a dark and lowly place now and feel half-dead or ready to halt.

YET thanks be to God that he that sitteth on the throne “healeth the broken in heart and bindeth up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3). In his sovereignty, he may take his time but he DOES come. And thanks be to almighty God, that after death comes the RESURRECTION.

In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth and by his grace, his might and his power, if you are a believer, once God has purposed, in his time and in his own way, it is a sure thing: You WILL RISE UP from those ashes, you WILL mount up with wings as eagles; you WILL run, and not be weary; and you WILL walk, and not faint (Isaiah 40:31 KJV).
