82. GOD – A HELPER AND A HEALER
Serving God comes with many benefits. As the all-powerful and all-knowing one, we reap blessings when we submit to his Lordship and aim to life lives that please and glorify him. 2 Chronicles 16:9 states, “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.”
Two (2) of the many benefits that we can be assured God provides is that of HELP and HEALING.
As human beings that are limited in power and knowledge and our spirit being willing but our flesh being weak, we are always in need of help as Christians, in this dark, evil and aggressive world. We are up against three foes: The devil who wants nothing but to make us fail and to destroy us, this world and our own stubborn and rebellious flesh. As imperfect human beings as well (although we have been perfected by the blood of Jesus), at times we sin or are so beat down by life, that we are in need of healing for our brokenness and restoration. Thankfully, God is able to grant us this as well, once we reach out to him in confession and repentance where we have messed up and for help where we feel weary, down and defeated.
The long and short of it is that no matter what we are going through, God is able to intervene to HELP us through it or out of it. He is also able to bring HEALING to our hearts, minds, souls and bodies, when we have been wounded by people or are in need of restoration because we have fallen, due to our own foolish decisions, sin and disobedience.
In terms of help, Christians can attest that there are times when they have experienced the Lord coming alongside them as they sought to do something and enabling them to get it done through the awesome power of his might. He is also known for helping when the Believer is utterly helpless, vulnerable, weak and therefore completely reliant on his intervention, to change the course or to influence the outcome and to sustain him or her.
It is easy, although we have experienced God’s wonderful hand upholding us, to forget, in this world so full of woe, that God is able to help us, irrespective of what we are going through, how long we have been going through it, how hopeless people think we are in our situation and how many people have given up on us. This is why it is so important to stay close to the Word of God, the Bible, so that we can be reminded when prone to forget, that our God is able. He is able to HELP us and he has power HEAL us.
This is very evident in the scriptures. There is a record there of people, knowing that he was able to help them or to heal them, reaching out to him to make humble request for his intervention. On other occasions, God himself declared that he would intervene in adverse circumstances, to help or to heal his children. Then there are verses where, people having experienced him, testified that he helped or healed them or stated by faith in his unchanging character, that they believed that he would show up in their circumstance to help them or to make them whole.
For example, in Psalm 31:2 and 10, David prayed, “O Lord my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me…Hear, O Lord, and have mercy upon me, Lord, be thou my helper.” Further, in Psalm 54:4, he declared, “Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.”
In Psalm 46:1-5 it reads:
- “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.”
In Psalm 12:1, David prayed, “Help, Lord; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men” and in Psalm 124:8 he acknowledged, “Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.”
Knowing the God he served and how he had faithfully helped him up to that point, David also stated in Psalm 37:39-40:
- “But the salvation of the righteous is of the Lord: he is their strength in the time of trouble. And the Lord shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.”
In Isaiah 41:10,13 to 14, God stated through his prophet to his people:
- “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness…For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee. Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I will help thee, saith the Lord, and thy redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.”
In Psalm 121:1-8, the Psalmist declared:
- “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”
Such a great help is God, no wonder Hebrews 4:16 encourages us “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
Hebrews 13:5-6 also reads:
- “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.”
In Psalm 33:20-22, the Psalmist stated, “Our soul waiteth for the Lord: he is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name. Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.”
King Asa who ruled over Judah, knew the Lord to be a help and a shield. For, he sought the Lord in prayer when an enemy confronted he and his people and God secured the victory. When he walked with the Lord in the earlier part of his reign therefore, he was dependent on him for help when in trouble and this was not a misplaced trust because God faithfully came through for him.
When Asa and the people were confronted for battle, the Word of God states:
- “And Asa cried unto the Lord his God, and said, Lord, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O Lord our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O Lord, thou art our God; let no man prevail against thee.” (2 Chronicles 14:9-13)
Yet, although king Asa was dependent on God and nobody else and therefore sought him for help when in need, sadly, he eventually met his demise because later on in his life, he failed to seek God for help in a future looming battle and in his illness. He therefore died.
That God is also a healer of any physical, spiritual, mental, psychological or emotional sickness, disease or issue, is also clearly seen in the scriptures. In Jeremiah 33:6 he said of his people, “Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth.”
The Bible contains prayers that people made to God asking for his healing or guidance on what they needed to do to avail themselves of his healing. It also contains testimonies from people of the healing he wrought in them or where he himself testified as to the healing that he would do.
For example, the scriptures read:
- “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3)
- “He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.” (Psalm 107:20)
- “Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.” (Jeremiah 17:14)
- “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)
- “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” (James 5:16)
- “But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.” (Malachi 4:2)
- “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)
- “Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the Lord, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the Lord.” (2 Kings 20:5)
- “If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord that healeth thee.” (Exodus 15:26)
- “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.” (Luke 4:18)
- “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” (1 Peter 2:24)
- “For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord; because they called thee an Outcast, saying, This is Zion, whom no man seeketh after.” (Jeremiah 30:7)
