333. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE SPEND QUALITY TIME WITH THE LORD
(The Information and Edification Series – Batch 12)
It is impossible to spend quality time in the presence of the Lord and to come out unchanged. Furthermore, whether we realize it or not, people will notice a change and they will take note that this is because we have been with the Lord.
After Moses had spent forty days and forty nights the second time on mount Sinai in God’s presence, he was not aware of it but the people noticed that his face shone. In Psalm 4:6, David prayed to the Lord saying, “Lord, lift up the light of thy countenance upon us” and in Moses’ case, this is exactly what the Lord had done. He caused his face to be radiant!
The Bible states:
- “And HE WAS THERE WITH THE LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments. And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him. And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him.” (Exodus 34:29-30)
That someone had spent time, quality time in the Lord’s presence was also observed by the people around in Peter and John’s time. Peter and John were mere fishermen, a profession that was not considered to be prestigious or that cultivated articulation. Yet, after Jesus had died (and rose again!), people noticed something different about both men!
They had been two of Jesus’ disciples and had walked closely with him therefore when he was on earth. They were there to listen to his teachings, to see his miracles and had therefore spent quality time in the Lord’s presence.
Peter and John may not have realized it but afterwards, after Jesus died and rose again and appeared to them and some other believers and then went back to heaven, Peter and John were changed men. Their speech was different. They now spoke when delivering the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with a boldness and articulation and authority that they did not have before.
And people noticed! They were perplexed for some time as they tried to understand and process how the same men could have been one way yesterday and yet like a completely different person the next, how they could have received no formal education or learning, yet suddenly speak with such eloquence and persuasion and they rightly perceived that this change had come about because they had spent time with the Lord. They rightly concluded and accredited the cause to the fact that these fishermen had been with the Lord during his earthly ministry.
Acts 4:13 reads “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.”
As far as they were concerned, Jesus had been killed and was therefore no longer among them but yet, somehow, his influence had lived on and was being manifested in Peter and John. Having believed on the Lord Jesus Christ and spent quality time with him, Peter and John now had a light from the Lord that was impossible to hide.
In John 8:12, when Jesus was on earth, he declared “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” Now, Jesus having died and rose from the dead, the Bible rightly states of those who have believed on him, his resurrection, surrendered their lives to his Lordship and therefore have relationship with him where they spend time in his presence and he speaks to them and they hear his voice, that they are the light of the world. For, he has bestowed his light upon them.
In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus told those who believed that he was God the Son and were spending time with him:
- “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill CANNOT BE HID. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. LET YOUR LIGHT SO SHINE BEFORE MEN, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
On a final note, there are three (3) things that we should note about spending quality time with the Lord, based on the accounts given of Moses, Peter and John. From the account given in Exodus 34 of Moses especially, we learn that:
1. When spending quality time in the presence of the Lord, THERE IS NO NEED FOR PHYSICAL FOOD.
Our spiritual appetite being fed is enough. God is the one who created food and drink and when with him, the desire for physical nourishment is quenched, the idea of food is forgotten and one is completely satisfied without need of anything. The same is true of everything that the world has to offer.
Exodus 34:28 reads of Moses:
- “And HE WAS THERE WITH THE LORD FORTY DAYS AND FORTY NIGHTS; HE DID NEITHER EAT BREAD, NOR DRINK WATER. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.”
2. After spending quality time with the Lord, PEOPLE WILL NOTICE A CHANGE.
It will be impossible to hide the radiance, the shine, the light that God has placed in us and people will be unable to deny the power at work within us.
Exodus 34:29-30 reads:
- “And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him. And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him.”
3. After spending time in God’s presence, WE WILL NOT COME OUT EMPTY BUT WILL BE FILLED WITH HIS WORD TO SHARE WITH OTHERS.
We will have something to impart to others and we will willingly want to share what the Lord has taught or told us, the wisdom gleaned and instructions given with them.
Exodus 34:34 reads:
- “But when Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he took the vale off, until he came out. And he came out, AND SPAKE UNTO THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL THAT WHICH HE WAS COMMANDED.”
