327. JESUS IS FAITHFUL NO MATTER WHAT

(The Faith Forum Series – Batch 12)

Hebrews 10 states that as those who Jesus, in him offering his body once for all (vs. 10) and as a sacrifice for sins forever (vs. 12), has, through this one offering, enabled us to obtain perpetual sanctification and perfected us forever (vs. 14), this knowledge of who we now are and have been made to be in the Lord Jesus Christ, should make us:

1. Have “…boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh” (vs. 19-20)

2. “Draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.” (vs. 22)

3. “Hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (FOR HE IS FAITHFUL THAT PROMISED) (vs. 23)

4. “Consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works.” (vs. 24).

In reading this scripture this morning, I was reminded that it doesn’t matter what you’re going through, what has happened in your life, how you feel, what people have said, what they believe about you or what they have done and keep doing to you. This ought not to stop you from holding fast to your faith by continuing to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, who, despite of everything, REMAINS FAITHFUL.

Think of Joseph in the Old Testament for example. All manner of evil was spoken about him by his own brothers and by Potiphar’s wife and possibly by other people, although it was not recorded. Yet, he did not allow the pain of all that he went through in being hated, betrayed by his brothers and wickedly treated, in being lied on and defamed and cast into prison, in being left there and abandoned for a number of years and forgotten by the man who could have helped him and who he had helped when he too was in prison and had asked him in turn, to help him, once he had secured his freedom, to let go of his faith in God.

Joseph endured unimaginable sufferings, yet, he did not let go of his relationship and walk with God. The scripture consistently says of him that God was with him (Genesis 39:2;3 and 21) and this was demonstrated in the way he lived. He understood that no matter what happened, no matter how much he hurt and no matter how confused he was as to why it was happening and why God was allowing it, God remained sovereign over it all. He had not shut his eyes, he had not gone to sleep and he had not turned his back on him. He had not been rendered in incapacitated or helpless by the fact that he was now suddenly in Egypt, a strange land he had never been before and among a strange people who spoke a strange language. No. Joseph understood that in God’s sovereignty, he had allowed it and he knew why and that was sufficient. He could trust God through it and trust him to help him overcome it because God REMAINED FAITHFUL in his love for him.

Life of a truth can be difficult and it can really throw things at you with the intention of cutting you down. However, your faith in Jesus, who he is, what he has said and promised and what he will do, should remain buoyant because he is King over the flood, he is Lord and is therefore greater than all. We can afford to take him at his word, no matter how tumultuous the storm. Peter knew this, which is why, when the Lord bid him come to him in an actual storm which required him to walk on water, he did, at least until he took his eyes off of the Lord and began to focus on the reality around him, which is that he was in the middle of the sea, in a storm and logic said that he would drown. He therefore started to sink but even then, Jesus demonstrated his faithfulness by reaching out to him and keeping him from drowning.

Matthew 14:24-33 reads of Jesus’ disciples who were in a ship and at sea:

  • “But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.”

There is nothing that we face in this life, no matter how painful, how humiliating, how shocking, how boisterous and relentless, that should make us let go of our faith in God and his Son the Lord Jesus Christ because we doubt that he faithfully cares for us.

Even in trying times or after we have suffered a beating from life, we should continue to believe in Jesus because HE IS FAITHFUL THAT PROMISED. He promised to grant us eternal life because we believe on him and have surrendered our hearts to his Lordship. He has also promised to never leave us or forsake us, to help us, guide us through this life, provide for us and sustain us. He made these promises after having taken into consideration everything that we would go through and all that we would be made to endure. Nothing we have suffered in life thus far and no mistake or failure on our part, took him by surprise, yet, he promised and HE IS FAITHFUL TO KEEP HIS PROMISES.

We are therefore to hold fast to our confidence in him. For, our faith was never based in ourselves, our strength, our wisdom, our ability or that of others who have proven time and time again that they can be fickle and unreliable. Our faith was founded on Jesus Christ, The Rock, who, in every aspect where we are weak, he is forever strong.

It is because he is faithful, that no storm is strong enough to destroy us. In Matthew 7:24-25, Jesus stated:

  • “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.”

It is because they knew that he REMAINED FAITHFUL, that Paul and Silas, even after being beaten for telling people about his death, his resurrection and the salvation that was available to them through him, by faith and even after being thrown humiliatingly into prison with all of their cuts and pain, could still rise above the occasion and sing praises unto God, so much so, that the prisoners heard them.

Matthew 7:23-25 says of them:

  • “And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks. And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.”

These men had been beaten, humiliated and imprisoned. Yet, their confidence in Jesus remained untouched.

Of a truth, as Christians and like Paul and Silas, our confidence should be unmovable because Jesus never fails and he is never defeated. There is no situation that has ever arisen or that will ever arise that will render him helpless, unsure, uncertain or overwhelmed. He is Lord over every circumstance and every situation must therefore bow and sway, as he directs in his sovereignty. For he Jesus is Lord and God over all.

Hebrews 3:1-2, 4-6 and 12-14 testifies of Jesus’ faithfulness and that he is therefore deserving of our immovable faith and allegiance:

  • “Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after; But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end…Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end.”

We ought not therefore, to allow anyone to so provoke, discourage or harass and oppress us, whether it be family members with whom we live or have to interact with, people positioned in the Church who are false professers or carnal Christians, people that the devil uses against us at the workplace, on the streets or any where else, that we let go of our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, who he is, what he has promised us and who we are in Him. This is exactly what the devil wants. Yet with our eyes fixed on Christ, we must let nothing and no one and no situation move us away from believing and trusting in him.

They will come. Situations will surely come to test us and people will position themselves as our enemies (sometimes subtly) around us. Yet, as the FAITHFUL LORD AND GOD has already declared in his Word in Isaiah 54:15 and 17 and we can believe it to be true of all those who are in covenant with him by the blood of Jesus Christ:

  • “Behold, they shall surely gather together, but not by me: whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake…No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord.”

1 Corinthians 15:58 therefore admonishes us, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”

No matter what we face or what we have been through, we can afford to take it to the Lord in prayer and boldly so, knowing that he FAITHFULLY CARES for us and wants to help us. His Word states in Psalm 55:22, Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.”

1 Peter 5:6-11 also tells us:

  • “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.”
