325. HOW TO BE BLESSED AND HIGHLY FAVOURED

(The Information & Edification Series – Batch 11)

People like to consider themselves as blessed, whether they believe in God or not, whether they obey his Word or not. They like to think of themselves as continually walking in a path where blessings fall from every hand and side, due to an abundance of favour that is on their life and simply because of who they are. Irrespective of the lives they live, they love the idea and convince themselves into thinking, that they are special and only good things will be their portion.

Yet, blessings don’t come out of the atmosphere. They come from the Lord, who is the blesser.  Proverbs 10:22 states that “The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it”.

To be blessed of God is attainable but he does not just randomly bless men and women. He pronounces blessings on those who believe and accept the truth and who then go on in submission, to conduct themselves in ways that please him.

To be truly blessed and highly favoured is possible but for us to walk in the path of blessings, we must act in accordance with what the Word of God says. It tells us plainly how we can live lives that are blessed and it is up to us to put what it tells us into practice. If we don’t, we delude ourselves into thinking that we are blessed because we are not. God may choose to be merciful to us yes, (he sends rain on the just and the unjust – Matthew 5:45) but this does not mean that because we experience good things in this life, like a good and stable job, a house, a car, a spouse, children or anything else, that we are blessed and favoured by him.

Based on what the Bible teaches (and we would do well to take note), a person that is blessed of the Lord lives his life in the following way:

1. By faith he BELIEVES THAT JESUS CHRIST WHO IS THE SON OF GOD, ROSE FROM THE DEAD AND IS LORD. He therefore CONFESSES THIS WITH HIS MOUTH, SUBMITS TO HIS LORDSHIP and PUTS HIS TRUST IN HIM.

The Bible states:

  • “Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. BLESSED are all they that put their trust in him.” (Psalm 2:12)
  • BLESSED is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is.” (Jeremiah 17:7)
  • “O taste and see that the Lord is good: BLESSED is the man that trusteth in him.” (Psalm 34:8)
  • “But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: BLESSED are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” (John 20:29)

2. He is FORGIVEN BY THE LORD FOR HIS SINS because he believes upon him in his heart, has confessed that he is Lord and trusts in him. If saved and he messes up, he genuinely repents for sins he committed. As a result, God does not hold his past against him but releases him, so that he can walk in freedom in Christ.

The Bible states:

  • BLESSED is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.” (Psalm 32:2)

3. Having believed on the Lord Jesus, surrendered his heart to him and obtained forgiveness, he is adopted into the family of God and BECOMES ONE OF HIS CHILDREN, which positions him to receive blessings in this life and eternal life in the life to come.

The Bible states:

  • “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath BLESSED us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3)
  • BLESSED is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.” (Psalm 33:12)
  • BLESSED and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.” (Revelation 20:6)

4. He REVERENCES THE LORD AND FEARS HIM, understanding that he is accountable before him. He therefore aims to live a life that is pleasing to him and to walk in his ways.

The Bible states:

  • BLESSED is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways. For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee. Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table. Behold, that thus shall the man be BLESSED that feareth the Lord. The Lord shall BLESS thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life. Yea, thou shalt see thy children’s children, and peace upon Israel.” (Psalm 128:1-6)

5. Because he fears the Lord, he DOES NOT OPERATE BASED ON THE ADVICE OR COUNSEL GIVEN BY THE UNGODLY and does not identify with them but SEPARATES HIMSELF from their way and practice. He is not carried away by every wind of doctrine or wind of modernity which the world blows. Instead, he ANCHORS HIMSELF IN THE WORD OF GOD WHICH HE DELIGHTS IN and therefore MEDITATES ON IT DAY AND NIGHT. He is therefore nourished in that place and lives a truly productive and purposeful life.

The Bible states:

  • BLESSED is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.” (Psalm 1:1-4)
  • “Praise ye the Lord. BLESSED is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.” (Psalm 112:1)
  • BLESSED are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord.” (Psalm 119:1)

6. As he seeks to grow in the knowledge and grace of the Lord by meditating on the scriptures, he PUTS INTO PRACTICE OR OBEYS WHAT THE SCRIPTURES STATE by truly serving the Lord, following in the ways and mind of Christ and walking in his footsteps. He ENGAGES IN CHRIST-LIKE CONDUCT and partakes in some of his sufferings.

The Bible states:

  • “But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be BLESSED in his deed.” (James 1:25)
  • BLESSED are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.” (Psalm 119:2)
  • “…BLESSED are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.” (Luke 11:28)
  • BLESSED are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. BLESSED are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. BLESSED are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. BLESSED are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. BLESSED are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. BLESSED are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. BLESSED are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. BLESSED are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. BLESSED are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.” (Matthew 5:3-11)
  • “And ye shall serve the Lord your God, and he shall BLESS thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.” (Exodus 23:25)
  • “See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil; In that I command thee this day to love the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the Lord thy God shall BLESS thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it. But if thine heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it. I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: That thou mayest love the Lord thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.” (Deuteronomy 30:15-20)

7. He aspires to live peaceably in so far as is possible with his brothers and sisters in Christ, PROMOTING UNITY AND HARMONY as a peacemaker, instead of divisiveness, strife, conflict and disunity.

The Bible states:

  • Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the Lord commanded the BLESSING, even life for evermore.” (Psalm 133:1-3)

8. He patiently WAITS ON GOD instead of rushing ahead in his own wisdom and doing what he wants or thinks is best.

The Bible states:

  • “And therefore will the Lord wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the Lord is a God of judgment: BLESSED are all they that wait for him.” (Isaiah 30:18)
  • The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.” (Lamentations 3:25)

9. WHEN HE IS TEMPTED HE ENDURES IT and overcomes because he is anchored in and strengthened by the Word of God.

The Bible states:

  • BLESSED is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.” (James 1:12)

10. He GIVES WILLINGLY TO THE POOR out of a heart of compassion for them.

The Bible states:

  • “If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother: But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth. Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest him nought; and he cry unto the Lord against thee, and it be sin unto thee. Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: Because that for this thing the Lord thy God shall BLESS thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto. For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land.”
