233. POPULARITY VS PECULIARITY

(The Information & Edification Series – Batch 5)

For those of us who have made the choice by faith to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, submit our lives to his Lordship and to follow Him, it is important that we know or be reminded, that Jesus calls us to a life of peculiarity.

Peculiarity is the opposite of popularity but sadly, many people today who have made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ and claim to be his, want to be popular. They want the same level of popularity as the world seemingly enjoys or even more and many renounce Christianity (which shows that they were never saved to begin with but merely had a form of godliness) in pursuit of this: the world’s recognition, the world’s accolades, the world’s rewards, prestige and approval.

Yet, as stated before, for Christians, Jesus calls us to a life of peculiarity, not popularity. To sign up for a life of service to him therefore, means to turn our backs on the world and to no longer look for its approval and well-wishes but to look squarely on Him. It means to take up our cross, to deny ourselves and follow Him. It means to carefully consider (before hand) the sacrifice that the life of Christianity requires us to make and then to decide if we want to go down this narrow path.

In Luke 14:26-33, Jesus himself urged those who were considering following him, to count the cost of what they would need to give up or be prepared to sacrifice, before embarking on the life of Christianity. For some, this would mean losing favour with family and being shunned by them. For others, it would mean losing close friendships.

Underscoring the enormity of the sacrifice required, Jesus stated:

  • “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
  • For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.
  • So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.”

In 1 Peter 2:9, of God’s people and the high calling to which they had been called in Christ Jesus, it states, “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, A PECULIAR PEOPLE; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.”

Notably, the scripture did not say ‘A POPULAR PEOPLE’ but ‘A PECULIAR PEOPLE’. Peculiar means strange, odd, distinctive, special and hard to understand. It means to do things differently from the norm, to deviate from the socially accepted path, to not conform to the status quo but to do things and see life, differently.

Titus 2:14 tells us of the Lord Jesus Christ that he “…gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a PECULIAR people, zealous of good works.”

Of this life of peculiarity to which we have been called, Romans 12:2 tells us, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Simply put, as Christians, we are not to dance to the beat of the world’s drum but to listen only to the voice of our Lord, when he speaks to us from or about his Word, the Bible and then shape our lives and perspectives in accordance with what it says.

In a nutshell, for Christians, a life of peculiarity means:

  1. Finding NO FAVOUR with the world;
  2. Being HATED by the world;
  3. Being ILL-SPOKEN OF by the world;
  4. Being CONSIDERED STRANGE by the world;
  5. Being ACCUSED of by the world;
  6. Being ATTACKED by the world;
  7. Being DISREGARDED, CONSIDERED TO BE NOTHING AND INSIGNIFICANT by the world;
  8. Being OSTRACIZED by the world.

All that I have outlined above is substantiated by God’s Word. For example, in John 15:18-20, Jesus told his disciples:

  • If the world HATE YOU, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also PERSECUTE YOU; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.”

Other scriptures tell us:

  • “Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: Wherein they THINK IT STRANGE that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, SPEAKING EVIL OF YOU.” (1 Peter 4:1-4).
  • “Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. If ye be REPROACHED for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.” (1 Peter 4:12-14).
  • “But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that FALSELY ACCUSE your good conversation in Christ. For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing. For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit” (1 Peter 3:14-18)

In short, a life of Christianity means to be in the doghouse of the world. For, they cannot understand us and because they can’t, they badmouth us and speak all manner of evil against us. Because we don’t do as they do and love the evil pleasures of this life that they do but instead, insist on supporting a cause and loving and serving a Saviour that they abhor, we also inherit their hatred, scorn and contempt.

As Hebrews 13:12-15 reminds us therefore, like Jesus, we must be prepared and accept our portion, of suffering outside the gate, that is, outside the gate of mankind’s approval and outside the gate of the world’s esteem and recognition. We must be prepared to be considered as NOTHING by the world, so that we can be SOMETHING for Christ.

The scripture admonishes:

  • “Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, SUFFERED WITHOUT THE GATE. Let us go forth therefore unto him WITHOUT THE CAMP, bearing his reproach. For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.”

When Jesus came into the world, the majority of people did not receive him or see anything in him that they considered attractive. He was therefore unpopular, despite all the miracles that he worked, all the good that he did and the fact that he lived a perfectly sinless life. In response, he was rejected, hated on, spit on, abused and crucified.

Of Jesus Christ, the word of God states that, “He came unto his own, and his own received him not” (John 1:11). Isaiah 53:2-3 prophesied of him and the world’s response when he would dwell among them:

  • “For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.”

For those who wish to follow Jesus therefore, they must bear in mind that all this could also be their portion. For, the world was hostile to Christ and similarly, it will be hostile to those who serve him and are in relationship with him.

If you claim to be a Christian and the world loves you, has accepted you and you are popular, then something is wrong with your message and the life that you are living. If you claim to be a Christian and the world is not upset with you and the way you live does not ruffle feathers wherever you go, then you should examine yourself whether you are truly in the faith. For, the world and worldliness is at war with Christ and all of his followers.

Remember this: The world does not see the need to trouble that, which resembles itself.

The more on fire you are for Christ and serious about the truth of his Word, abhorring compromise, the more the world will hate you and come after you. If on the other hand, you hardly have a problem with anything, live a life of compromise, are more concerned about trying to fit in, so as to be POPULAR and not to ruffle any feathers, than in being separate and pleasing God, if you look like them and dress like them and talk like them and pursue the things that they pursue and with the same fervour, if you like the music that they like (so much so, that you steal their beats and try to create so-called ‘Christian’ or ‘gospel’ music with it), if you watch the movies that they watch and enjoy the activities that they enjoy and go to the ungodly places that they go, then they know that you are not really different from them. There is nothing distinct or PECULIAR about you. The enemy doesn’t feel threatened by you and while I can’t say with any surety what you are, you may very well be one of them.

I am mindful of the old adage, “If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.” There is also the saying that “birds of a feather flock together.”

Matthew 7:16-20 puts it best, when it states:

  • “Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.”

1 John 2:15-16 tells us:

  • “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. IF ANY MAN love the world, the love of the Father is NOT in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”

Of those who claimed to know and be following Christ but yet were adopting the way and mentality of the world, James 4:4 called them out on their folly, stating in words that seemed quite harsh but soberly truthful and solemn: “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? WHOSOEVER THEREFORE WILL BE A FRIEND OF THE WORLD IS THE ENEMY OF GOD.”

It ought not to be considered strange therefore, when, if as Christians, we seek to do God’s will and to live a life that is pleasing in His sight, we are disregarded, put-down, hated on and considered to be insignificant and strange by the world. The world loves its own and will esteem its own, including false teachers, pastors, prophets and unregenerate church-goers who, though operating under the banner of Christ, really belong to the world.

WHAT ABOUT SEEKING POPULARITY, PREEMINENCE AND PRESTIGE IN THE CHURCH?

In addition to what I have written on above, I have also noted a development within Church circles, where some professing believers are now pursuing popularity within the very Church circle. It is as if they have concluded, that if they can’t be popular in the world, they will at least ensure that they are popular in the Church.

Of course this leads to problems like dissension, envy, competition and strife because it is founded in pride, which is a worldly trait or characteristic.

In James 4:1-3, this popularity drive, apparently manifesting itself from since the days of the early Church, James wrote bluntly about it, stating:

  • “From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.”

Determined to be popular in the Church, a man named Diotrephes was also striving to have the pre-eminence or control over other believers, in the Church where he was at, to the point where he was even rejecting some believers of which God had approved and undermining them with his tongue!

In 3 John 1:9-11, Paul writing of him, stated:

  • I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not. Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church. Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.”

Equally as disappointing as seeking popularity in the world therefore is when professing believers pursue after popularity in the Church. Christ did not die for our sins and bring us into relationship with him, so that we could be popular, make a name for ourselves or lord over others. He himself, although he thought it not robbery to be equal with God, made himself of no reputation and condescended to low estate when he came to earth to save mankind, further humbling himself and submitting to the death of the cross. He himself, although God the Son, did not come to earth to be given royal treatment (although deserving) but to serve and minister to the needs of others.

In Philippians 2:1-8, it tells us:

  • “If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let NOTHING be done through strife or vainglory; but in LOWLINESS OF MIND let each esteem other BETTER THAN THEMSELVES. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of NO REPUTATION, and took upon him the form of a SERVANT, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he HUMBLED himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name.”

God wants us to have the same mentality, not to look for opportunities to exalt ourselves in our pride but to humble ourselves under HIS mighty hand, so that HE can exalt us as HE sees fit, when HE sees fit, if HE sees fit, in due season. 1 Peter 5:6 tells us, “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.

In Mark 10:35-37, it tells us that two of Jesus’ disciples (James and John, the sons of Zebedee) sought to secure high positions for themselves, for when they got to heaven. They specifically went to Jesus and made request that one would get to sit on his right hand and the other on his left, when in his glory.

In Matthew 20:20-21, it states that it was their mother that went with them and made the request to Jesus. Either way, whether it was the mother who approached Jesus with the request or her sons themselves, this family was seeking its own interest, within the body of Christ and seemingly, wanted positions of preeminence and recognition over all other believers, when in heaven. They were pursuing, to my mind, a selfish agenda, which was at variance with God’s Kingdom agenda.

Naturally, when news of this got to the ears of Jesus’ other disciples, they were very displeased. It highlights the fact that seeking to esteem one’s self or one’s family or one’s circle, over others in the body of Christ and seeking after popularity, position, preeminence and prestige, always brings friction, even in the body of Christ.

Jesus’ response to all this, including how the disciples reacted, must have shocked all of them. He told them:

  • “Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But so shall it NOT be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

In Romans 12:1-5, 9-10 and 16, in knowing of the temptation of even Christians, in seeking after popularity and to be seen, recognized and highly regarded and esteemed among themselves, Paul told them:

  • “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
  • For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another… Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour PREFERRING ONE ANOTHER Be of the same mind one toward another. MIND NOT HIGH THINGS, BUT CONDESCEND TO MEN OF LOW ESTATE. Be not wise in your own conceits...”

It is disappointing therefore, when professing believers today, think that popularity is important and that if it can’t be gotten in the world, it is to be aspired towards among the Church. Professing believers who think this way, then manifest it through their actions, by deliberately aligning themselves with other professing believers that they consider to be ‘popular’ or ‘successful’ (which usually means that they are well-liked and highly esteemed by other professing believers, have a large social media following, have a good job, make a decent amount of money, have a spouse or at least someone that they intend to marry, children, a nice house and the perks of life).

In aligning themselves only or mainly with those they consider to be popular, well-liked and ‘successful’, these professing believers then begin to look at these people as more important, more spiritual and favoured of the Lord, while looking down at, frowning on, seeking to suppress, ignoring, separating themselves and avoiding or even ostracizing other Christians who are not considered to be as popular, as successful or as well-liked (especially if they are going through trials and adversity), even dismissing what God has gifted such persons with for the necessary edification of the Church.

This sort of thinking is wrong because it is worldly. It is not from above but is earthly, sensual, devilish.

In James 3:1,13-18, James once again called out professing believers who were operating in this manner, telling them:

  • “My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation…Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.”

If we find that we think and operate in this manner therefore and inwardly love to be popular or to align ourselves with those believers that we deem to be popular and in the limelight, we should spend some time in introspection and repentance before the Lord.

If we find that people gravitate towards us and that we are well-liked by many people, as Christians, this is not an opportunity to puff our chests in ego or to inwardly fill our hearts with pride, thinking that we have arrived, while others have not but to use this as an opportunity to humbly point our many followers and observers to CHRIST. We should want them to see HIM, not us. For, HIS NAME ALONE is excellent (Psalm 148:13), not yours, not mines, not anybody else’s. We must remember this and live our lives to promote HIS GLORY, not our own.

As I close, I will leave some of my ‘BIBLE-BELIEVING Daughters of God – Hephzibah Diaries’ Facebook quotes with you, all of which I felt compelled to write on different occasions, in 2020 (the year the pandemic began to rage globally).

My being unpopular and considered by many to be insignificant myself, these quotes were all written, based on my observations over the years of certain disturbing occurrences in Church assemblies and in the body of Christ, when it came to the issues of POPULARITY, PREEMINENCE and PRESTIGE. As I felt led, I wrote:

  • 1. There is no dog in the body of Christ. When it comes to God’s children, it is not okay to be nice to some people and rude to others or to like some and dislike others. If you treat a brother or sister in the faith badly, unless you repent, expect God to requite it.
  • 2. It doesn’t matter if people never heard of you. Once they heard of Christ as a result of the life you lived, that is all that matters.
  • 3. Jesus made himself of no reputation. Part of the problem today in Churches is that we have too many professing believers, running around trying to make a reputation for themselves.
  • 4. There ought to be no such thing as CALIBRE, CLIQUE or CLASS in the body of Christ. Such foolish thinking promotes disunity, divisiveness and dissension. If every professing believer properly understood that he was nothing more than a miserable sinner saved by God’s grace, such thinking and the trouble it usually brings, would be non-existent.
  • 5. Ironically, some people that we consider to be WRITE-OFFS are people that God considers to be ASSETS.
  • 6. We have no relevance outside of JESUS.
  • 7. Resist the temptation to build a name for self. We are not here to build a name for self. We are here to build a name for CHRIST.
  • 8. Too much self in the pot, SPOILS the stew.
  • 9. If you’re not advancing God’s Kingdom, it’s because you’re busy advancing YOURS.
  • 10. Father in heaven, I can’t MAKE ANYTHING OF MYSELF but I look to see what you will MAKE OF ME. Make something of me to your honour and glory, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
  • 11. Are you WEAK? A RECLUSE? Not exactly POPULAR or HIGHLY ESTEEMED by man? Jesus wants to use you. If you would submit to his Lordship, he can.
  • 12. Note to self: If you are a child of the King, trust God to use you, even when you feel useless and completely unusable. For, your usability is not dependent ON YOU but on the Spirit of Christ LIVING IN YOU. It is not by your might or by your power but by HIS Spirit.
  • 13. If they see ME, then I’ve failed. If they see JESUS OPERATING THROUGH ME, then I’ve succeeded.
  • 14. Some people who profess to know Christ, behave as if they are important, invincible and in control…until God BREAKS them.

ADDENDUM

Today, I saw a news story which I found to be disturbing. It involved a recently appointed politician in the country where I live, who ‘claimed’ to be a Christian and to therefore have relationship with the Lord. Despite his so-called ‘standing’ in his religious denomination and how much he was respected among them, in observing him, I had long perceived by his actions, that he was merely religious and not the real deal. In short, he had a form of godliness but denied the power thereof (2 Timothy 3:5).

He also belonged to a denomination that, while it called itself a Church was fundamentally flawed when it came to the truth and therefore, on the path that led to destruction. Not surprisingly therefore, today, which is a religious holiday in my country, in celebration of a group of people that have embraced a false religion and that therefore engage in idolatrous worship, this man and his wife decided to put on the garb that is worn in this false religion and attend the idolatrous festivities.

Clearly, they did it to be POPULAR, to find favour with men and they did. People, pleased with their actions, commented:

  • “The appreciation of other’s religion, culture and traditions is what makes [this Country] unique and unified. We must never be fragmented, divided nor gullible to react or uphold a racial divide. Something good is happening, unity and strength are what it will take to get our country… back”
  • “Love to see that you all embrace different cultures and religion…”
  • “Absolutely awesome. Blessings to you all. Keep that love flowing.”
  • “Awesome!! So happy to see this.”
  • “Awesome. True representation.”

The politician therefore got what he wanted, which was the commendation and approval of the world. Although already well-liked, his POPULARITY soared to even greater heights as a result of his actions. He was ‘pat on the back’ so-to-speak and applauded by the people of the world, them thinking that he had done something so wonderful.

Yet, God’s Word remains. Friendship with the world IS ENMITY WITH HIM. This man clearly was about being POPULAR, fitting in and pleasing people, not God. For, God hates idol worship. Any worship of anything or anyone outside of Him, the true and living God, is idolatry.

Whereas the world calls us to join hands with all religions therefore and to accept and embrace whoever or whatever people want to worship, God calls all those who truly belong to him to SEPARATE.

Although I had perceived before that this politician was not a genuine Christian but was merely religious, what he did still got me upset. I felt angry. For, he had blatantly joined with a false religion and partook in their idolatrous festivities, having no qualms about it whatsoever but yet had the audacity to claim that he was a Christian and that he ‘preached’ sermons from time to time. This was absolutely shameful.

2 Timothy 2:19 states: “Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”

I wondered what this man’s denomination must have thought of his actions and if they too were pleased with what he had done. He had chosen the commendation of the world (which loves the idea of acceptance and unity of all religions although God hates it) and in so doing, obtained the frown and disapproval of God.

God’s Word is clear. It states to all those who claim to belong to Him, that he expects them to live a life of SEPARATION from ALL that he disapproves and all that is false. In 2 Corinthians 6:17 for example, his Word commands “Wherefore COME OUT from among them, and BE YE SEPARATE, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.

In response to the abominable and shameful pictures that I had seen, I found myself writing again. I wrote:

  • “When it comes to serving God, it is not about INCLUSIVITY, doing that which APPEASES EVERYONE and POPULARITY. It is about SEPARATION, doing that which PLEASES GOD and PECULIARITY. If you’re not ready to forsake whatever needs to be forsaken for Christ, then you are not ready to be his disciple.”
