120. GOD – “I AM A GREAT KING”

(The Faith Forum Series – Batch 3)

True worship gives unto God the best that we have and not so that we can get something in return or for show or so that we can be seen of others and have them formulate a favourable view as to our level of spirituality. It is also not something that is done mechanically or as a routine because that is how it has always been done or because of the burden of the expectation, that this is how it is to continue to be done.

NO! True worship gives the best that we have and are to God without thought of reward, without care for what people might think and without any desire to reap their accolades in the form of compliments, recognition, likes or attention.

True worship is birthed out of a heart of love, it is passionate (not indifferent, lukewarm or passive but on fire) and does not consider the opinions of man or the repercussions. It emanates from the soul and cannot be contained, silenced or suppressed, no matter the opposition, the limitation, the price or the sacrifice. For the true worshipper knows, that the God he serves is more worthy than those to who we give recognition, fear and honour to, on earth. He is much more. He is A GREAT KING.

The true worshipper serves God in spirit and in truth and gives unto him his very best with no ulterior, self-serving motive and for no other reason, than the compelling, awe-inspiring and humbling conviction of the fact, that he is A GREAT KING.

What a stark contrast between the poor widow in Mark 12:38-44 whose offering God accepted and Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5:1-11, whose offering God rejected. Without looking for attention and despite her small offering not coming close to the great sums being put into the treasury by others, this poor widow gave unto the Lord the very best that she had, which was all of her life savings: Two mites.

Life had seemingly, not been kind to her but yet, out of a heart of true worship, she still desired to give her best to God.

Whereas man may have scoffed at her offering because it may have seemed to be measly and insignificant, Jesus was well pleased with it because he knew her heart and he knew her means. She desired to give something precious unto the Lord and she did it, although it cost her everything. In giving her last two mites to the Lord, she had no idea where her next meal was going to come from. Yet, she put God first and gave him her all.

Ananias and Sapphira on the other hand, gave with a wrong, self-serving motive. They did it for show and reputation because they wanted to be esteemed and revered by man. To make matters worse, they did not give of their best but kept back part of the offering secretly, although they tried to pass their contribution off, as their best. In trying to secure favour with man, they lost their focus, used deception and therefore, lost favour with God. He rejected their offering and ended their lives because of their folly.

In Malachi 1:6,8 and 14, God, in speaking to the Israelites whose offering he was not at all pleased with at the time, reminds us of who he is and therefore, why he deserves our very best.

He is more than an earthly father or master or governor. He is more than those who we hold in high esteem and have the utmost respect for, here on earth. He is more than any President, Government or Politician. He is A GREAT KING. He states:

  • “A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the Lord of hosts unto you…And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person? saith the Lord of hosts…But cursed be the deceiver, which hath in his flock a male, and voweth, and sacrificeth unto the Lord a corrupt thing: for I AM A GREAT KING, saith the Lord of hosts, and my name is dreadful among the heathen.”
